(Technical) Hybrid and EV – Drivetrain with Bill Weaver

Friday AM Session

Speakers
  • Bill Weaver
Summary
In hybrid and electric vehicles, the Motor–Generator converts electrical power to mechanical power (and vice/versa). In essence, the motor uses electricity whereas the generator produces electricity. Through a process known as regenerative braking, the generator transfers otherwise wasted energy created by the rotating wheel while braking back to the battery pack. The motor then uses power from this high capacity battery pack to drive the vehicle’s wheels. Throughout this course, participants will be introduced to the operation of the Motor-Generator, Inverter/Powertrain and Resolvers. While some of the traditional methods are still valid, Technicians will learn essential new skills and tools needed to service Hybrid and Electric vehicles. Meg-ohmmeter and milli-ohmmeters are two of the tools used when diagnosing faults within the motor generator windings and the high-voltage cables that supply the voltage for the motor generators. Diagnostic procedures will be investigated using Scan Tools, Milli-ohmmeters, Mega-Ohmmeter and DVOMs to detect and resolve fault issues. Recommended for A and B level technicians.

(Technical) The Fuel Trim Playbook: Interpreting Data That Drives Results with Andrew Fischer

Saturday AM Session

Speakers
  • Andrew Fischer
Andrew started his path in the automotive world at a very young age. His grandfather Joe was a shade tree mechanic who held training in very high regard. From a young age Andrew would go to classes with his grandfather at nights and on weekends taking notes for him. Through this, his love for the diagnostic side of automotive repair blossomed. Andrew attended UTI in 2002. After leaving UTI he started his career in a high performance specialty shop learning the ins and outs of the internal combustion engine. From there he grew as an automotive technician in the independent shops of Northwest Indiana. Soon he found himself working in a GM dealership where he specialized in diesel and transmission repairs. From this his love for trying to understand all things mechanical grew. In 2018 Andrew found himself in a position to take over teaching duties at a local high school automotive program. This grew his love for teaching and sharing his knowledge. He states that the lessons he learned in teaching the younger generation of potential technicians drove him to create a training company. At the conclusion of the 2020 school year Andrew decided to go back into the shop to enhance his skill set. This would also allow him to focus on training up and coming technicians without all the roadblocks that come with public education. Since 2020 Andrew has been working as a full time diagnostician. When not working in the shop he has focused his energy on building and presenting classes across the United States with his training company FACTS.
Summary
In this course, you will learn the importance of interpreting fuel trim data accurately to diagnose issues such as vacuum leaks, fuel delivery problems, and sensor faults. We’ll emphasize the vital role of oxygen sensors (O2 sensors) and air-fuel ratio sensors, demonstrating how their signals directly influence fuel trim behavior and overall engine health. Using live data, you’ll explore how to identify abnormal fuel trim patterns and what they reveal about underlying system problems. You’ll develop the skills to determine whether trims are within healthy ranges or indicative of deeper issues, and how to differentiate between short-term adjustments and long-term fuel trims that have become “learned” behavior. By understanding the interaction between oxygen sensors, air-fuel sensors, and fuel trims, you’ll be empowered to perform more accurate and efficient diagnostics, reducing guesswork and improving repair outcomes. Whether dealing with misfires, rough idling, or high emissions, mastering fuel trim analysis will become an essential tool in your technical toolkit.

Transmissions have been controlled by computers for a long time. As a result, transmission issues can be electrical or hydraulic/mechanical in nature. When a vehicle with a transmission issue rolls into the shop, it is often “shipped” to a transmission specific facility. Why? A perfectly capable technician, who can accurately diagnose an engine issue, could tackle a transmission issue. Why lose the customer? This course outlines a logical process for attacking transmission failures. Using tools and techniques that driveability technicians already possess. We will discuss how to draw the line between an electrical problem or an internal transmission issue. Basic knowledge of automatic transmissions is a plus, but this course is geared towards non-transmission technicians.
